So, word on the street (and by street, we mean by the fabulously talented team at HireAHelper) is that moving season is officially here! Yep, National Moving Day was just 2 weeks ago (May 27th)! Moving is in full swing and now is the time when most people are packing up their goods and schlepping them to a new place of residence.
This whole “moving season” phenomenon got us to thinking…when is the best time to move? I mean we totally get that most of the time you don’t decide on the date of your move. Sometimes it’s a lease, a new job, or a new school year that dictates when and where you’re moving. But if you did have the luxury to decide exactly when to move….what would the ideal season/month/date/time be?
If you want to save money, then you may want to schedule your move when most people are not moving. You’ll have more resources available to you (trucks, moving companies, packing supplies) and they’ll all typically come at a lower price.
We did the research and we’re here to tell you the best time to move…
WHAT TIME OF YEAR?
Most people move during the summer months, and that means that moving companies can charge a premium. If you’re looking to save some serious cash, you may want to consider moving during the off-season. But this can be tricky, because moving in the winter isn’t good either. Cold and snowy weather can make travel difficult for both you and the moving truck, and it might not be a good idea to keep your precious belongings in a freezing truck. Therefore, fall and spring seem to be your best bets.
Verdict: October, November, March, or April
WHAT TIME OF THE MONTH?
Since many leases start at the beginning of the month, you want to avoid the last week of the month and the first week of the month. Smack dab in the middle of the month may be the most affordable option. Also, be sure to avoid any holidays or dates where most people will be off of work.
Verdict: 15th of the month
WHAT TIME OF THE WEEK?
Most people look to move Friday – Sunday…so they can avoid taking too many days off of work. Plus family and friends are more likely to help out on the weekends. But it may be beneficial (read: easier on your pocketbook) if you move during the week. If you choose mid-week, you’re more likely to get a reservation with your moving company at a better price.
Verdict: Tuesday or Wednesday
WHAT TIME OF THE DAY?
A morning reservation with your moving company is the ideal time of day to schedule your move. Your movers are more likely to get there near their arrival time, barring bad traffic or an accident. Avoid afternoon move times, because your moving team is then reliant on their first move of the day going smoothly and efficiently. Plus a morning move means you’re into your new place that much sooner…giving you ample time to unpack and get settled.
Verdict: The earlier the better!
